Location Valley Center is in San Diego County and is located to the east of I-15 on Old Castle Road. This provides residents easy freeway access into San Diego, the second largest city in California and only an hour drive to the south.
History Early Indians inhabited the area and the land was considered part of Mexico. When President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, many early American settlers moved into the area to claim parcels of land for their families. With the harrowing incident in 1866 of a huge 2,200 pound Grizzly bear being caught, the area was referred to for many subsequent years as Bear Valley. By 1878 the name was changed to Valley Centre and the name was changed again slightly in 1887 to Valley Center and remains so today.
