Location Oceanside is in San Diego County, California, and is the third largest city in the county. History Prior to the first Spanish missionaries, the Luiseno Indians inhabited the area. June 13, 1798 Father Fermin Lasuén founded the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia along the San Luis Rey River. The parishioners of the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia continue to restore this working mission today. By the early 1800s settlers began growing crops and grazing cattle in the area.
In 1848 the United States government annexed the area from Mexico and July 3, 1888 the community of Oceanside was incorporated. New residents moving into the area found Oceanside was a desirable beach town with miles of Pacific Ocean beaches, endless days of sunshine and a great quality of life. By the early 1920s and 1930s the city had grown to the point South Oceanside began to be developed with affordable homes.
